“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” – once said Bob Marley, and it is so true, music really has the power to soothe the soul. Music somehow reminds me of that tiny little moment early in the morning when the first rays of the sun gently break the night and give you hope that there’s always the light no matter how dark it gets.
I discovered Luca D’Alberto and his magical music when I just moved to Portugal. I was all alone, didn’t know anyone and anything in this country and his music was one of the most powerful sources for my strength and inner healing at the time. It would help me to fall asleep many nights when I had strong anxiety and couldn’t.. it would help me to always keep moving forward, see the light within and share it with the others. Therefore I’m very grateful that today can share with you all an interview with Luca – a classical composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist from the heart of Italy.
Could you introduce yourself in a few words? Especially for those who never heard about you and your music.
Imagine a composer in a room, surrounded by violins, pianos and many strange instruments, he is deeply lost in his music looking for the greatest Beauty ever.
What / who had the biggest impact for you to choose the pathway to become a musician / composer?
My first music “impact” concern a carillon…the carillon was in the music room of my house, where my sister and my mother used to play the piano. The music room had no doors so the notes would expand throughout the floors and the stairs, invading the house. I would play the carillon every day so my mother, to prevent me from breaking it, would put it somewhere high where I would not be able to reach it, but somehow I always managed to. Maybe it was then that I realised I wanted to become a composer..create music was and still is for me like magic.
What is your favourite project / collaboration you have ever worked with? ..and why?
I have the good fortune to work and collaborate with many great artists, every one is special for me for different kind of reasons. The collaboration with Ditta Miranda from Tanztheater “Pina Bausch” in my project ESTASI was special and of course the one with Saskia Boddeke and Peter Greenaway or the Italian director Costanza Quatriglio. Now I’m doing a great collaboration, composing an album together with Tom Smith (Editors frontman) and he will be too the special guest on a track in my next solo album that will be released by Decca/Universal. Tom is a great artist and human I like his energy and his fantastic talent.
What does the the music mean to you, how would you describe it?
For me music is life, because I NEED to make music and so it’s always with me, of course sometimes is hard because it’s an amazing gift that never leaves me alone
How would you describe your style / the core of your music?
Usually I describe it like a caress that is close to you, you can feel but will not touch you, its like a promise, the moment that you are waiting for something, this “limbo” moment makes you move your illusions, your hope, your desire and your fear.
What would be the main “message” that connects all the music you’ve ever created?
If there will be something after this human life I would like to connect these two world, trying to be brave and be always in contact with my soul, to compose sincere music, this for me is the important step to do Art.
Who creates visual part (videos) for your music? Which from them you love the most and why?
Im connected with many of them, it’s magical to see how the directors come into contact with my music in a lot of different ways. Wait for me, Her dreams, Consequences, Like we were are just some titles that I can give to you where the videos deeply touch my heart.
What’s your favourite musician / composer in the world and why?
I have to say that my favorite artist is not a composer but the choreographer Pina Bausch.
What are some recent projects you’ve been working on?
My next solo album that will be released by Decca/Universal and the album with Tom Smith (Editors frontman)
What does the word “love” mean to you?
..mmm hard question I can say that to experience the love and to try to know this magic aspect of the life you must accept the fear, otherwise you’ll love in half.
“Music is to be heard not only with the ears.” – Luca D’Alberto
